Importance Of The Golden Gate Bridge

Apart from being the longest suspension bridge once upon a time, the Golden Gate Bridge is important to its people, builders, and operators and to the whole city in general as also the ones who are in love with one of the most wonderful architectural creations.

Before the Golden Gate Bridge came into existence, the only means of transport from San Francisco to Marin County was through ferries as driving on the roads that were that were available was very time-consuming. With the Golden Gate Bridge, people today can travel to the north from San Francisco, defying many experts who saw no scope of constructing a bridge amidst the strong winds and current across the Golden Gate Strait that would make the construction and operation of bridge practically impossible.

The existence and the popularity of the Golden Gate Bridge highlight yet another importance of the suspended bridge. It continues to be one of the attractions for tourists all over the world. It would not be wrong to say that the Golden Gate Bridge represents the identity of San Francisco.

The American Society of Civil Engineers recognized it as one of the seven wonders of the modern world in 1994. It was ranked at the second place in the Top 10 Construction Achievements of the 20th century. Owing to a net that was suspended underneath the floor, 19 people were saved from death during its construction. They were many times also called as the “Halfway to Hell Club”! A new record was established in the safety of architectural construction given the fact that only 11 workers had died in its construction.
