It was the world’s longest bridge of its kind until the year 1964, when the much longer Verrazano Narrows Suspension Bridge was constructed in New York. The middle span of the bridge is about 4,200 feet in length and almost ninety feet in breadth. The change in weight may be because of the extensive use new material for decking.
The bridge towers have a height of 746 feet, when measured from the surface of water, and 500 feet, when measured from road surface. Each bridge tower has a total weight of nearly 44,000 tons. These towers stand on legs measuring 33 x 54 feet in dimensions and are supported by 600,000 rivets each. Approximately 83,000 tons of steel and nearly 7,260 feet of cable were utilized in the bridge’s construction.
The two major cables support the two main towers, while being fixed firmly at the anchorages on both ends of the bridge.
Every single cable is made using 27,572 wire strands, which if stretched will have a total length of almost 40,000 miles.
The roadway running across the bridge is very well equipped with 128 high pressure sodium lamps of 25 watt each, while the sidewalks are lit using 24 low pressure lamps of 35 watts each.
