The Southern Pacific’s automobile ferry services had become very profitable by that time and made vital contributions to the growth and development of the regional economy. The 20-minute ferry was priced at $1 for every single vehicle.
Although the city was served predominantly by ferries, it lacked a permanent connection with the surrounding communities. This significantly affected trade, and as a result, the rate of its growth was not as par with the national average. Consequently, many people felt the need to connect San Francisco with Marin County. And, thus, the Golden Gate Bridge was built.
