Where Is The Golden Gate Bridge ?
The world famous Golden Gate Bridge is situated in the San Francisco city. It is a unique suspension bridge built to link San Francisco with Marin County. It begins at the scenic San Francisco Bay and ends at the Pacific Ocean, the largest ocean in the world. It forms an integral part of the US Route 101 and California State Route 1. |
Once upon a time, this bridge was the world’s longest suspension bridge. However, it lost its record status in year 1964, when the Verrazano Narrows Bridge was constructed in New York.
Measuring nearly 1.7 miles in length, the Golden Gate Bridge is ranked at number nine on the list of the world’s longest suspension bridges. The bridge’s middle span measures nearly 4200 feet in length and about 90 feet in width. The total weight of the original structure bridge was recorded to be 894,500 tons. The weight has now reportedly reduced to 887, 000 tons. The weight reduction in the bridge can be attributed to the usage of new decking material.
The bridge’s towers measure exactly 746 feet in height from the water surface, and nearly 500 feet over the roadway.
Each of the two towers weighs nearly 44,000 tons and is supported by a 33 x 54 feet leg backed by 600,000 rivets. The bridge was constructed using nearly 83,000 tons of steel and around 7,260 feet of cable. The main towers are supported by two main cables, which are securely fixed at the anchorages of the bridge on both its ends. Each of these two cables comprises of 27,572 wire strands, which if unwound may go up to a length of 40,000 miles.
The roadway built on the bridge is well illuminated with 128 lights, which are powered using high pressure sodium lamps of 25 watt each. The sidewalks, on the other hand, are illuminated using twenty four 35-watt, low pressure sodium lamps.
