Why Was The Golden Gate Bridge Built ?
San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge is one among the world's most famous suspension type of bridges. It begins from the opening of the panoramic San Francisco Bay and extends to the Pacific Ocean, the largest ocean on planet earth. The bridge, thus, connects San Francisco to Marin County. It was once considered to be the world’s longest suspension bridge. However, it later lost this status to New York’s Verrazano Narrows Bridge, built in 1964. |
Before the Golden Gate Bridge was constructed, the only was one could commute between San Francisco and Marin County was via a boat that traveled through San Francisco Bay. Although this small-scale ferry service was inaugurated in the 1820s, they were very irregular in their operations. It was only in year 1840 that this service began to be used for transporting drinking water to San Francisco.
The service of the Sausalito Land and Ferry Company was first launched in the year of 1867. In due course of time, this service got eventually transformed into what became the Golden Gate Ferry Company. This company was known worldwide for having the largest operation of ferries in the latter half of the 1920s. The Southern Pacific’s ferry services were highly profitable and had made significant contributions to the regional economy.
The automobile ferry trip was of nearly twenty minutes and charged a price of just $1 per vehicle.
Although the city was serviced mainly by ferry services, San Francisco was established as the largest city. However, as it lacked a stable connection with the communities located in its vicinity, its growth rate was much lower than the estimated national average. Owing to this, many inhabitants felt a serious need to let San Francisco get connected with the Marin County. It was for these reasons that the Golden Gate Bridge connecting the two regions was finally built.
