Previously, Hawaiians believed that the volcanoes were caused by Gods and demigods and hence they always cherished these mountains. Legend says that Pele, who was considered as the Goddess of fire, travels to earth and the moment she keeps her foot on the ground, the portion of earth under her feet trembles and erupt fire. Some geologists do believe in this myth, while scientists have their own theories.
