Where Is Chile Located ?
Officially Chile is known as the Republic of Chile. It is located in South America, between the Andes Mountain in the east and the Pacific Ocean in the west. |
It shares its borders with Peru on the north, Bolivia on the northeast, Argentina on the east and the Drake Passage at the southernmost part of Chile. The country also has some islands in the Pacific Ocean, namely Juan Fernandez, Sala y Gomez, Desventuradas and Easter Island. The most amazing part of Chile is the shape of the country, and its narrow width. The country has a ribbon-like shape and is around 175 kilometers wide. It is around 4,300 kilometers long. This would account for the different climatic conditions present in the country. The world's driest desert, Atacama Desert, is located in the northern part of Chile, while the central part has a Mediterranean climate, and the southern part of the country has a rainy temperate climate.
The northern part of Chile has a lot of mineral wealth, particularly copper. The central part of the country is where the agriculture takes place, while the southern part is rich with verdant forests and grasslands. Volcanoes, lakes, fjords and canals are located in the southern part of the country.
Before the Spanish came to Chile in the 16th century, Chile was ruled by the Incas in the north and Araucanian Indians in the central and southern part. Finally in 1810, Chile declared its independence from Spanish rule, but the actual independence only came in 1818.
From 1879 to 1883, Chile fought the War of the Pacific against Peru and Bolivia, and it was during this war that the country won the northern parts of the present-day. After independence, Chile saw military dictatorship from 1973 to 1990. However, today the country is stable and one of the most prosperous countries in South America.
