Fernando Botero was born in Medellin, and he is a world famous painter. Although Botero has been painting from the 1940s in his characteristic style, it was only in the 1960s that he achieved recognition. Later, in the 1970s, Botero took up sculpting, and started creating masterpieces.
Botero always dreamed of becoming a bullfighter, but his talent for painting and sculpting far outweighed the dream. Today, many museums around the world showcase his pieces allowing people to see his artistic talent.
Carlos Vives originally hailed from Santa Marta, but moved to Bogota when he was young. He actively pursued a career in acting, while he spent his time singing in bars and cafes around Bogota. Before long, Vives became a popular singer in Colombia. However, his true success came when he started recording classic Vallento songs sung in his own characteristic style. His songs have won him several accolades, including the Grammy Award and Latin Grammy Award.
Shakira is a world renowned singer of Lebanese and European descent. She was born in Barranquilla, Colombia. She started writing poems at the age of 4, and before long she also started writing songs. Very soon she started singing and performing belly dances to gain international recognition. Shakira is also a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF.
Juan Pablo Montoya is from Bogota, and a popular Formula One racer. Montoya's father taught him his racing technique in a go-kart track. He is one of the rare racers who successfully won not just the Formula One races, but also ChampCar, IndiCar, GrandAm and Nascar. He has started a foundation in Colombia along with his wife to improve sports facilities and infrastructure in the poor neighborhoods of the country.
Edgar Renteria was the first Colombian to play in the World Series. He was born in Barranquilla, and started playing in the Major League Baseball in the mid 1990s with Florida Marlins. He has been awarded the Silver Slugger, All Star and Golden Glove Award many times.
