In addition, this beautiful country extends over both sides of the equator. The country is blessed with a variety of landscapes and climates that is conducive to different sorts of economic activities. The history of Colombia is extremely fascinating. Based on archaeological findings, it is estimated that around 10,000 BC, near present day Bogota, hunters and gatherers had their colonies. Each colony used to trade with the other. Then in the first millennium BC, Amerindians formed a pyramidal political structure known as Cacicazgos. The system was headed by caciques. The two cultures that are believed to have had the most complex cacicazgos systems were the Tayronas and the Muiscas. In fact, it is believed that after the Incas, the Muiscas had the most developed political system in the continent.

The Spanish explorers first came near the Caribbean in 1499. The exploration was headed by Rodrigo de Bastidas. Then in 1502, Christopher Columbus came near the Caribbean; and finally in 1508, it was Vasco Nunez de Balboa who started conquering the territories of Colombia. These territories were populated by the Chibchan and Carib tribes. Then in the 16th century, the Europeans started bring in slaves to Colombia from Africa.

During the Conquest and Colonization, the Colombians tried to gain their independence. However, most of these were crushed. Then in 1810, Simon Bolivar and Francisco de Paula Santander became the leaders who took up the call for outright independence from Spain. Finally in 1819, Colombia, which as known as Viceroyalty of New Granada at that time, got its independence. Simon Bolivar became the first president of Colombia, while Francisco de Paula Santader the vice president.
