Besides Chile, Ecuador is the only South American country that does not share a border with Brazil. Even the Galapagos Islands located some 1,000 kilometers in the Pacific Ocean are part of Ecuador.Officially the country is known as the Republic of Ecuador. The name of the country means the Republic of Equator. The Equator passes through Ecuador, and the country lies on both sides of the Equator.
The capital of Ecuador is the city of Quito, which is a World Heritage site. The city is considered to have some of the best preserved historical sites and building in entire Latin America. The largest city, however, is Guayaquil, which is a port too. The third largest city of Ecuador is Cuenca, which is also a World Heritage site because of the Spanish style design of the city.
The country also has diverse flora and fauna. The country has taken steps to protect its delicate ecosystem by way of the new constitution that was put into place in 2008. The constitution can legally enforce ecosystem rights, and it is the first country to do so.
Ecuador gained its independence in 1830 after being part of the Spanish empire and also a part of the Gran Colombia along with Colombia and Venezuela.
Based on some of the recent statistics, around 38.3 percent of Ecuadorian population live below the poverty line.
