The president of Ecuador is Rafael Vicente Delgado Correa. He is also the current president of the Union of South American Nations.

Correa, who was born on April 6, 1963, was educated in Ecuador, Belgium and the United States. For a brief period in 2005, he was the Finance Minister. In January 2007, Correa was elected the president of Ecuador, and he declared that the national debt of the country was illegal as it was created by the previous corrupt regimes. He also promised to fight all international creditors in the international court. In June 2009, Correa was instrumental in making Ecuador a part of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Americas.

In April 2009, Correa was re-elected for a second term in office. He was sworn in as the president on August 10, 2009. Although Rafael Vicente Delgado Correa is an economist, he prefers to describe himself as a humanist and a Christian of the Left.

Correa was born in the largest city of Ecuador, Guayaquil. He went to the Universidad Catolica Santiago de Guayaquil and received a degree in Economics in 1987. After that he worked for a year in a welfare center run by the Salesian Order in the province of Cotopaxi. Here he learned the Kichwa language. Besides this, he speaks Spanish, English, French and Quecha.

He then went to Belgium to earn a Masters degree in Economics at the Universite Catholique de Louvain in 1991. In 1999, he received a Master of Science in Economics from the University of Illnois at Urbana-Champaign. Finally, in 2001, he received a doctorate in Economics.

Under President Alfredo Palacia, Correa became the Finance and Economy minister in 2005. He was in office for just 4 months during which he tried to reduce poverty and enhance economic sovereignty of Ecuador. He did not support the free trade deal that Ecuador signed with the US. Also, Correa did not take any advice from the IMF. Instead he worked to improve trade and economy with other Latin American countries. Correa resigned from the government after the World Bank withheld a loan due to the country.
