The Islands are around 300 miles or 480 kilometers from the mainland of South America. It is around 700 miles from Antarctica. The islands considered to be overseas territory of the United Kingdom with their own government.The British have ruled Falkland Islands from 1833. However, Argentina has been staking claim to the islands, and even invaded the Falklands in 1982. This invasion led to a 2-month long Falkland War between Argentina and the UK. However, Argentina was defeated, and she withdrew her forces from the islands.
The people of the Falkland Islands also do not accept Argentina's claim of ownership.
The Queen is the executive authority and the governor of the islands administrates on her behalf. The governor also handles the administration of South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands. However, defense and foreign affairs of the islands are handled directly by the UK.
A new constitution for Falkland Islands was introduced on January 1, 2009. Now the islands have an executive council and a legislative assembly. The council is responsible for advising the governor, and is chaired by the governor. In addition, the council comprises of the chief executive, financial secretary and three legislative councilors.
The legislative council comprises of the chief executive, financial secretary and 8 legislative councilors. Five legislative councilors are elected from Stanley, and three from Camp. They are elected for a term of four years. The legislative council is chaired by the speaker.
