French Guiana Culture

The French Guiana is situated on the northern coast of South America between the countries of Suriname and Brazil.

Because it is located close to the equator, French Guiana has hot and humid weather practically all round the year. The average temperature is around 80 degrees Fahrenheit, or around 27 degrees Celsius.French Guiana culture is quite diverse as it has been influenced by the French, Caribbean and Creole cultures. The best way to experience French Guiana culture is through the cuisine. You will find delicious Caribbean and Creole foods along with Western and Asian foods. Usually the French Guianans eat rice with most dishes. Also, seafood is consumed quite a bit.

Most families grow vegetables and fruits, which are sold in the market. Also fish and meat are quite profitable businesses. When you go to the local market, you will be able to pick beautiful craft work. The standard of living is higher than most countries of South America, but the rural areas of the country have not witnessed so much prosperity.

Most of the French Guianans are Roman Catholics, but there are other religions present. You will find the Amerindian beliefs, Buddhism, Hinduism, Island and African religions. Usually most of the marriages take place in churches, but the venue can vary depending on the religion of the bride and groom.

You will find that the French Guianans actually follow the French way of dressing. However, the clothes have been adapted to the warm humid weather. Usually the people are friendly and hospitable, but in rural areas, the people might be on their guard as they do not see many foreigners.
