French Guiana History
It was the Spanish who first discovered French Guiana way back in 1496. This led to them establishing settlements here from 1503. The French came a century later. |
The Dutch, who were also present in French Guiana, were forced to leave after the signing of the Treaty of Breda in 1667. For the next 200 years, the French, British, Dutch and Portuguese had control over the territory. Finally, the territory was handed over to the French in 1817.In the 1850s, gold was discovered in the French Guiana, and the country saw a lot of prosperity during that time. However, once the gold had exhausted, it never really recovered from the economic decline.
In 1946, the French government finally made the French Guiana into an overseas department, and this ruling made the territory a part of France. However, this did not help the territory too much as it was neglected by the French government. This was too much for the people living in French Guiana, and led to civil unrest in the 1970s. The French government was quick to wield the whip, but at the same time promises of improvements were made. However, no improvements were initiated until Francois Mitterrand became the president. In 1982 and 1983, a series of reforms were initiated, and now most of the local affairs are handled by a Regional Council.
The Regional Council is headed by a president, who is also the sole representative of the French Guiana in the Senate. This position has been held by Antoine Karma since 1992, and he belongs to the Parti Socialiste Guyanais or PSG.
