French Guiana Language
When Christopher Columbus was making his third trip to the New World in 1498, it is believed that he spied the coast of Guiana. |
However, the French established a settlement here only hundred years later, and named the place Guiana, which is the French word for the Amerindian word that meant Land of Waters.French Guiana was used as a place to banish French convicts, and this practice continued right until 1951. However, now things are much different. The European Space Agency has a station there and it is used to launch communication satellites.
French Guiana is divided into three regions, namely the coastal plain, the hilly plateau and the Tumac-Humac Mountains. The interiors are packed with tropical rainforest. Nearly 40 percent of the population of French Guiana inhabits the capital city of Cayenne. Nearly 66 percent of the population is made up of Africans and Afro-Europeans; 18 percent are East Asians, Chinese, Amerindians and Brazilians. The interiors of the French Guiana are inhabited by the Palik and Oyampi tribes that still follow the lifestyle that their ancestors used to follow before the Spanish came in.
The official French Guiana language is French. All business is conducted in French, but there are other languages spoken in the country. Creole language is spoken by a lot of people. However, not many people in the country understand or speak English. It is quite possible that a few government officials, police and gendarmes speak English, but English-speaking visitors should not rely on this. Another form of language that is spoken in the French Guiana is the Taki-Taki. This is a form of pidgin English that is spoken by some African tribes.
