Guyana is located in South America, and it is the only country in the region that is English speaking, and also that is part of the Commonwealth of Nations.


The country's population comprises of indigenous Indians, Europeans, Africans, Chinese and Indians. Therefore, the main foods in Guyana are influenced by all these cultures.The cuisine of Guyana is a perfect blend of the different cultures present in the country. The people here love to use green peppers, onions and celery as ingredients to prepare different dishes. The Creole dishes of Guyana use spicy sauces, fresh vegetables, fried meats and seafood.

While the main foods in Guyana are simple, they are known for their freshness and flavor. You will find meat and chicken curries from India; rice and chicken cooked in a completely different manner from Africa; and pork preparations from Portugal. However, pork is usually eaten during Christmas.

The Guyanese take care to prepare their dishes with just the right amount of spices. In addition, certain dishes can also be colored using food colors to give them a fancy appearance. The Guyanese prepare vegetables in a variety of ways, and sometimes cereals are added to the vegetables, especially traditional dishes. The desserts that are prepared are rich, sweet and delicious, and can be made using sugar and rum.

Some of the main foods in Guyana are pepperpot, roti, curry, chow mein, and meta gee (these are dumplings made from corn flour, yam, cassava, plantain and cooked in coconut milk). Another favorite food of the Guyanese is cook up or one pot meal that is made from meats or vegetables along with rice. The most popular beverages made at homes are mauby, which is a drink made from the bark of a tree; sorrel; and ginger beer.
