Culture of the people of Guyana is reflected in everything such as their food habits, marriages and the games. It would not be wrong if it is said that the most the festivals are particular of Guyanese. It is the land of many religions. Christianity, Hinduism, Islam are the three major religions of Guyanese.People of Guyanese celebrate many occasions. Their festivals are colorful. Their strikingly beautiful costumes float parades, masquerade bands and dancing in the streets can make anyone forget the world round him or her. Masquerades, performing acrobatic dance is a reminder of Guyana’s African heritage.
Hindu Guyanese have a religious holiday which is observed in the month of March. It is called Phagwa. Hindu Guyanese observes this Phagwa to celebrate the triumph of good over evil. Another Prahad is another occasion which is observed by the Hindus, and along with the Hindus, Guyanese, Muslim Guyanese also celebrate this occasion.
What most of the Muslim Guyanese celebrate is Eid-ul-azha. They sacrifice fully grown animals in order to fulfill the Prophet Abraham’s willingness to offer his son Ishmael as a sacrifice to Allah. Similarly, Christians too have an occasion to celebrate. They celebrate Christmas, the birth of Jesus Christ.
Guyana is truly a place where people of different cultures, different traditions mingle together and take part in every activity to show that they are one.
