So, it can be said that the culture of Paraguay is actually a blend of Spanish and Guarani cultures and traditions. Today, nearly 95 percent of the population of Paraguay is Mestizos.More than 80 percent of people in the country speak Spanish as well as Guarani. Jopara, which is blend of Guarani and Spanish, is also spoken by many people.
The fusion of two cultures is evident in different art forms found in Paraguay. Embroidery and lace making are good examples. Also, the music in the country consists of polkas, fast toe-tapping galopas and the peaceful guaranias that is played on a native harp. Similarly, the food of Paraguay is also influenced by Spanish and Guarani cultures.
Many of the dishes that are prepared in Paraguay use manioc and other indigenous ingredients. One popular dish is the sopa paraguaya. This is very similar to corn bread. Another popular item that is prepared is chipa, which a type of bread made from manioc, cheese and cornmeal. Many dishes in Paraguay are prepared using different types of cheeses, onions, bell peppers, cottage cheese, cornmeal, milk, butter, eggs and fresh corn kernels.
A mention of culture of Paraguay will be incomplete without its literature. In the 1950s and 1960s, many Paraguayan writers and poets like Jose Ricardo Mazo and Roque Vallejos. Augusto Roa Bastos has won the Nobel Prize for literature, and he is from Paraguay.
Paraguayans lay a lot of emphasis on family and extended family. Their main loyalty is towards their family, which in turn helps and supports them in their hour of need. Family influences practically everything in a life of a Paraguayan. The family decides which political party a person will join, who he or she will marry, what type job the person should do and whether a person should immigrate to another country. However, at the same time, Paraguayans are extremely friendly and hospitable.
