Culture Of Peru

More than half of the population of Peru lives along the coast. The remaining people live in the Andes.


However, less than 5 percent of the population lives in the rainforests of Peru. The culture of Peru is greatly influenced by its ethnic groups. 45 percent of the population is indigenous; 37 percent is Mestizo, 15 percent are Caucasians; while the remaining population is of African or Asian descent. All these different groups have greatly influenced the culture of the country.Peru's folk art depicts the country culture perfectly. For the people it extremely important not just for their cultural identities, but also because it provides livelihood to many families and communities like Sarhua and Quinua. The art of Peru depicts pre-Columbian shapes and symbols, which have blended with shapes and symbols brought by the Spanish settlers to form something completely new and unique.

Music is a way of life in Peru. Recently archaeologists discovered some musical instruments, and these were believed to have been played at least 10,000 years ago. Some of the ancient music instruments of Peru include quenas, zamponas and pututos. Also, Peruvians were known to make musical instruments from cane, mud, bones, horns and even precious metals.

Besides art and music, festivals are of great importance in Peru. The country celebrates a whopping 3,000 festivals each year. Most of the festivals celebrated honor patron saints, and Christian beliefs. However, these festivals have blended with the indigenous forms of worshipping and have evolved into a perfect blend of religious and pagan celebrations.
