Lima is the capital of Peru. It is like any other metropolitan city with a large population of 7.8 million. However, the city is quite polluted, and smog covers the Lima for most days of the year. The summer lasts from December to April, and this is the best time to relax on the beach. With all its population, noise and pollution, Lima is quite an interesting city. It is full of museums, shopping malls and ancient pyramids that stand together, blending old and modern times in perfect harmony.
Arequipa is the second largest city in the country. The city is prone to volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. Because there is quite a bit of volcanic ash lying around the city, Arequipa is often referred to as the White City. The city is located close to Lake Titicaca and also Cotahuasi and Colca, which are the deepest canyons in the world. In addition, you can see colonial churches and monasteries scattered around Arequipa.
Trujillo is located on the northern coast of Peru. It was founded in 1534 by the Spanish, and it has managed to retain many of its colonial era architecture and buildings. Incidentally, Trujillo was the first city in Peru that declared its independence from Spain in 1820. The city has many pre-Columbian sites that are worth visiting. Most of these are located in the outskirts of the city.
Chiclayo is located in the northwestern part of the country, and is a commercial hub. It was founded in the 1500s by Spanish missionaries. Even today, there are witch doctors and shamanic practices in existence in the city. Besides its numerous historical sites, the city is location is its major draw. It is just 13 kilometers from the Pacific coast.
