The capital of the country is Paramaribo, which is located along the banks of Suriname River. Although it is one of the smallest countries in South America, Suriname has its share of famous people.

The most famous person from Suriname, who is also known internationally is Anthony Conrad Nesty. He shocked the sporting world during the 1988 Seoul Olympics when he defeated the favorite Matt Biondi from the US in the finals of the men's 100 meters butterfly.
Before 1984, Nesty was practically unknown not just in Latin America, but also in his own country. In the mid 1980s, he went to the US to study at Bolles School in Jacksonville, Florida. Here he devoted all his time and energy perfecting his swimming. However, he went on to win the gold medal during the Pan American Games held in 1987 at Indianapolis, US. However, even after this achievement, Nesty was not expected to be one of the medal winners in the 100 meters butterfly at the Seoul Olympic Games. However, he surprised everyone by doing so.
Nesty was honored for his achievement when he was nominated to be the flag bearer for Suriname during the Beijing Olympics opening ceremony.
Another famous person from Suriname is Jules Wijedenbosch, who is the head of state.
Who can forget Suriname's most famous politician and prime minister, Johan Adolf Pengel? The country honored him by naming its only international airport after him. Pengel was the prime minister of Suriname from 1963 to 1969.
