Suriname Festivals
Suriname is a small country located in the northern part of South America. |
It is the only Dutch speaking country in the western hemisphere which is not a part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The official name of the country is the Republic of Suriname.The country is extremely multicultural, and this diversity is reflected in its religions and languages. The same multicultural heritage is also responsible for giving the country many religious festivals. Some of the festivals that are celebrated nationally are as follows:
- January 1 -- New Year's Day
- May 1 -- Labor Day
- June 5 -- Immigration of the Indians
- July 1 -- Keti Koti, Emacipation Day
- August 8 -- Day of the Indigenous People
- August 11 -- Immigration of the Javanese
- November 25 -- Independence Day
- December 5 -- Children's Day
- December 25 -- Christmas Day
- December 26 -- Second Christmas Day
- December 31 -- New Year's Eve
Besides the above listed festivals, Suriname celebrates a number of festivals that come according to the Hindu and Islamic religions. Some of these include Diwali, Phagwa, Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha. These festivals do not have fixed dates and fall on different dates each year depending on the Hindu and Islamic calendars. In addition, Suriname also celebrates the days on which Indian, Javanese and Chinese people first arrived into the country. Each ethnic group celebrates the first ship's arrival which brought in their ancestors centuries ago to this beautiful and marvelous country.
