Suriname Food
|
Just like its neighbors, Guyana and French Guiana, the Suriname food is quite different from the food that you get in other countries of South America. |
Where Is SurinameRight until the 1970s, Suriname was a Dutch colony. During colonization, the Dutch brought in Indonesians and East Indians to work as laborers in the plantations. The workers made their food using the spices and ingredients that were available locally. Slowly their style of cooking blended with the cooking of the indigenous people and the Europeans. Today, this is what Suriname food is all about.
The people from Suriname use a lot of exotic fruits and seafood in their cooking. However, the basic ingredients that are constantly used for making nearly all dishes are cassava, rice, potatoes, sweet potatoes, lentil, plantains and tayer, which is a type of tuber.
