Venezuela is known as one of the most urbanized countries in Latin America. It also has one of the largest national parks in the world. The park is the Canaima National Park. The highest point in the country is formed by Pico Bolivar, which stands at an elevation of 5,007 meters. Venezuela also has the largest lake in South America called Lake Maracaibo, as well as the world’s highest free-falling waterfall called Kerepakupai-Meru, or what is more popularly known as the Angel Falls. The biggest rodent in the world named Capybara is an inhabitant of the grassy plains or llanos of Venezuela.
The name Venezuela means ‘Little Venice’ and the first European said to have found the coast of Venezuela was Christopher Columbus. It is said that the country was named Venezuela by its explorers because they saw the local houses on stilts in a lake, which reminded them of Venice. The biggest exporter of oil in the world in the early twentieth century, Venezuela was one of the founding members of OPEC.
