No one planning a trip wants to think about what can go wrong. But a little caution is wise. When buying travel insurance, be sure to take the time to choose a policy according to your needs. Keep the following things in mind when evaluating travel insurance plans.
The basic things that your insurance policy should cover are:
- Travel cancellation/interruption insurance
- Medical coverage
- Emergency medical evacuation
In addition, there are various optional things that you can choose, depending on your requirements. These requirements vary according to the modes of travel, destination, preexisting medical conditions, duration of stay etc. For example, if you intend to travel internationally, you might want to consider whether your policy covers lost (or delayed) baggage claims. Also, you might want to buy a policy that will compensate you for lost passports, and assist you in getting a duplicate one.
If you have any preexisting medical conditions, make sure your policy covers for the same. Also ask if your health insurance will be accepted as payment in the country you are traveling to, or you will be expected to pay yourself, and then be reimbursed. If you are going to indulge in adventure sports during your stay, you might want to buy a policy that covers for these activities. Most insurance policies will not cover activities like parasailing, mountain climbing, scuba diving etc.
Make sure you read and understand the fine print. There may be a “conditions apply” clause under some parts of your policy. You should know exactly what is covered, and what is not.
