Nationals from the United States do not need a visa to travel within the United Kingdom. This also applies to European Union, Australian and New Zealand nationals. Most nationals from all the other countries need to apply for a UK visa prior to departing from their home country.

The nationals who do not require a visa to visit the US, however, should apply for a visa if their stay is going to extend beyond 60 days. When it comes to visiting Schengen countries, the date of entry is considered to be the day you arrived in any Schengen country. For example, if you arrive in the UK on a particular date and then go to Germany, the date of arrival is taken as the day you arrived in the UK and not Germany. Keeping this in mind the allowed stay without a visa has to be calculated carefully.

The following is the visa requirements for entry to the UK:

A valid passport with minimum 6 months validity
A duly filled visa application form
A recent passport sized picture
For traveling within the United Kingdom, you need to indicate the dates of travel and the nature of tourism in detail.
Recent bank statements have to be provided and also you can prove your financial stability by showing travelers checks.
In addition, you would also need to go directly to the embassy to submit some bio metric data like finger prints. The UK has made this mandatory for nationals of any country who want a visa.
